Basic, Volkswagen-badged version of Audi 50 subcompact car, launching in 1975. The Polo was radically changed for the 1980s with a bread van-styled hatchback, though a coupé with a more traditional rear joined it. The third-generation model from the mid-1990s was more upright, resembling a smaller version of the Golf, and it is this philosophy that the Polo has retained since, with each generation increasing in perceived quality, far from the basic origins of the first model.
