2004 Volkswagen Phæton Lang.jpg

Volkswagen Phaeton (VW611). 2002–16 (prod. 84,325). 4-door saloon, 4-door LWB saloon. F/A, 2967 cm³ diesel, 3597 cm³ petrol (V6 DOHC), 4172 cm³ (V8 DOHC), 4852 cm³ diesel (V10 DOHC), 5998 cm³ (W12 DOHC). Top saloon from Volkswagen, designed to take on Mercedes-Benz S-Klasse. Developed under Ferdinand Piëch, Phaeton had certain lofty refinement and performance goals in development. Fastback design of Concept D show car abandoned for formal three-box design. Platform shared with Bentley Continental GT, transmission and some engines with Audi A8. New factory created for the model. Most successful in domestic market, less so in exports, where Volkswagen lacked the snob value needed in the luxury class. Minor facelifts in 2007 and 2009, and a more comprehensive one shown at Beijing in 2010.

Manufacturing location: Dresden, Germany

Marque: Volkswagen | Successor: Volkswagen Phideon
