Volkswagen Jetta (Typ 16/1G). 1983 to date (prod. 1,708,390 approx. Germany only). 2- and 4-door saloon. F/F, 1093, 1272, 1595, 1781 cm³ petrol, 1588 cm³ diesel (4 cyl. OHC), 1781, 1984 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC). Revised Golf II meant a similarly revised Jetta, with larger, roomier body. Good handling, but firm ride and not the quietest, but the model proved popular during its run. German production to 1992. Chinese production at FAW initially with CKD kits, with full local production from 1995. First diesel offered in a mass-produced car in China (2002). Long life in China thanks to reputation for solidity, and facelifted regularly (1997, 2004, 2010) to keep up with trends and Volkswagen’s corporate look.
