Volkswagen Golf (Typ 19E/A2). 1983–92 (prod. 6,301,000 approx.). 3- and 5-door saloon. F/F, F/A, 1272, 1585, 1763, 1781 cm³ petrol, 1588 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1781 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Volkswagen kept the Golf formula the same for the second-generation model, smoothing out the corners in line with trends. Improved safety, corrosion protection and standard equipment, with five-speed gearboxes standard for models above 51 kW. Dependable, fairly refined range. More options, including ABS and power steering. Syncro four-wheel-drive models introduced 1986, including raised-height Golf Country from 1990, made by Steyr–Daimler–Puch. Rally homologation special (prod. 5,000) featured 1763 cm³ engine with 118 kW. GTI plusher in this series, and included five-door model; GTI Syncro available. Ten millionth Golf (including Golf I total) manufactured 1988 as part of this series.
