Volkswagen 1303/Volkswagen 1303S/Volkswagen 1600 (Typ 1). 1973–80 (prod. 916,000 in Germany). 2-door saloon, 2-door convertible. R/R, 1285, 1584 cm³ (4 cyl. OHV). Replacement for Super-Käfer, with similar designations to before (1303 has 1·3, 1303S has 1·6 with 50 PS). Larger, curved windscreen, new rear wings and “Elefantenfüße” lights, and four louvres in engine cover, among the 95 changes to 1302, some in response to US safety legislation proposals (which never came into force). German production to 1975 (convertibles to 1980), replaced by Golf; Brazilian production of 1600S began that year with sunroof-equipped models the most collectible. Minor changes each year in Brazil, with greater structural changes in 1977 (retractable bar to protect driver in frontal impact, petrol tank nozzle moved to right), and anti-pollution measures in 1978.
