Vauxhall Chevette 2-door.jpg

Vauxhall Chevette (T-car). 1975–84 (prod. 415,000 approx.). 2-, 3- and 4-door saloon, 3-door estate. F/R, 1256 cm³ (4 cyl. OHV), 2279 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC). British version of GM’s T-car “world car” project. Entry-level Vauxhall, slotting below Viva, and using Viva’s 1·3-litre engine, but with Opel Kadett C-type body. Front end boasted “cat’s eyes” look that had started with the Vauxhall Firenza HP. Originally a hatchback, beating Ford and Chrysler with this body style in the UK; notchback saloons and estates from 1976. Hot hatch model, the HS 2300, launched 1978, and competed successfully in rallies. Exported without a marque (just as ‘Chevette’) to continental Europe and sold at Opel dealers after the deletion of Opel City in 1979. Flush headlights from 1979 in UK. New Zealand had interesting Enduro series with Radial Tuned Suspension and RoStyles from 1979; it was deleted 1981 and was the last Vauxhall-badged car sold there. Basic motoring, but fairly practical and very successful for Vauxhall. Estate formed basis of Bedford Chevanne light van in UK.

Manufacturing location: Luton, Bedfordshire, England

Marque: Vauxhall | Successors: Holden Gemini (TE), Opel Corsa A
