Triumph Spitfire 1500.jpg

Triumph Spitfire 1500. 1973–80 (prod. 95,829). 2-door convertible. F/R, 1493 cm³ (I4 OHV). Larger engine to cope with power loss in US market thanks to emissions’ regulations. US received 1500 before other countries; UK followed in December 1974. Engine in non-US markets generally more powerful, with higher compression, but less reliable than earlier 1·3. Detail improvements, such as chrome disappearing in 1976 in favour of matte black items and TR7 switchgear in 1977. California emissions’ regulations meant 1500 could not comply come the 1980s. Deleted in 1980 along with most of the Triumph range as BL rationalized and the Canley plant was closed.

Manufacturing location: Canley, Coventry, England

Marque: Triumph | Model: Triumph Spitfire | Predecessor: Triumph Spitfire Mk IV
