The Triumph Motor Co. can trace its roots back to a bicycle retailer in 1885, before branching out and making its own products in 1889. By 1902, it began the manufacture of motorcycles, and automobile production began in 1921 after the acquisition of the Dawson Car Co. By 1936, Triumph divested its bicycle and motorcycle interests, but by 1939 it was put into receivership. In 1944, after interruption by World War II, the [[Standard]] Motor Co. bought the remainder of Triumph, including its brand, and transferred production to Canley.
