Toyota Tercel (AL10). 1978–82 (prod. n/a). 2-, 3- and 4-door sedan. F/F, 1295, 1452 cm³ (I4 OHC). Toyota commenced development of its first front-drive range in 1974, in the wake of the fuel crisis, aiming for best-in-class fuel economy while meeting future Japanese and US emissions’ regulations. Clean-sheet design, including new 1A-U engine (1·5, 80 PS), and weight saving where possible. Tercel was also meant to be more aerodynamic, even if more modern eyes might not view it that way. Dubbed Corolla Tercel in US. Mid-term changes 1980.
