Toyota Camry (XV10).jpg

Toyota Scepter/Toyota Camry/Toyota Vienta (XV10). 1992–7 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, 2-door coupé. F/F, 2164 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 2959, 2994 cm³ (V6 DOHC). Domestic appliance on wheels, successfully targeting the US market with what Toyota called ‘world-size’ dimensions. Average in most respects, and a top seller both in North America and Australasia; ironically, less well regarded in Japan as buyers considered it looked bloated. Scepter in home market, to distinguish it from Camry, which had stuck to the 1,700 mm width to fit into a lower tax bracket. Scepter virtually identical in profile, but noticeably wider (at 1,770 mm). Wagon and coupé imported from US to Japan as specialty models; the latter not resonating with consumers due to plain looks. Exported as Camry, though Australian V6 models badged Vienta for that market. Mid-term facelift in 1994. Japanese production completed 1996. Badge-engineered as Holden Apollo (1993–7) in Australia.
