Toyota Publica (P30/UP30/KP40/P50). 1969–78 (prod. n/a). 2- and 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé, 3-door wagon. F/R, 790 cm³ (F2 OHV), 993, 1077, 1116 cm³ (I4 OHV). Second-generation Publica, more sophisticated to attract young baby boomer buyers as a first car. Related to Corolla, sharing some of the engines. Mid-term changes in 1972, when sedan gained more of a fastback style. Sporty, longer Publica Starlet coupé from 1973, which later lent its trim level name to the Publica’s successor. More upright Publica Starlet four-door also introduced 1973. Sedan replaced by Starlet February 1978, while van produced till October of that year. A pick-up commercial, not covered in Autocade, survived till 1988. Twinned with Daihatsu Consorte, which had its own 1·0-litre engine.
