Tapping in to the SUV craze, Toyota created a crossover version of its Corolla, different from the Spacio minivan built in Japan. Supposedly combining wagon, SUV and MPV traits, with fold-flat rear seats, Matrix was essentially identical to its donor car, but for performance XRS model, geared toward sportiness. Shared platform with Pontiac Vibe (2003–8), built in the same factory. Renamed Toyota Corolla Matrix for 2005.
