Toyota Kijang/Toyota Qualis (KF40/KF50). 1986–2004 (prod. 525,615 for Indonesian market). 4- and 5-door UV, 4- and 5-door LWB UV. F/R, 1486, 1781, 1812, 2237 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1998 cm³ petrol 2237 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Third generation of Kijang, with passenger “minibus” model featuring two wheelbases. Double wishbones up front, leaf springs at rear. Recirculating ball steering finally changed to rack and pinion in 1989, power steering in 1991. More major changes in 1992 with alterations to the front and rear, and the addition of a driver’s side rear door. Instrument panel and seats also changed as Kijang’s standard equipment improved. In 1994, 1·8 with 72 PS added, along with a new grille. Replaced in 1996 on the home market, though exports continued. CKD assembly in Taiwan and South Africa, with nameplates such as Stallion and Venture. Indian assembly of Qualis, a development of the Kijang (and LWB only), from December 1999, with a new grille and alloy wheels, and the 2·4 diesel as standard, though customers were disappointed given the base car’s age. Poor performance, with a 0–100 km/h time of over 20 s. Facelift in 2002, with 2·0 OHC petrol engine introduced.
