Toyota Crown (S170).jpg

Toyota Crown (S170/GS171/JZS171). 1999–2007 (prod. 351,888 sold in Japan). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, F/A, 1988, 2492, 2997 cm³ (I6 DOHC). Full model change for Crown, including a replacement for the S130 station wagon, which had been in production for 12 years. Straight sixes returned with some minor changes, but the diesel was history. Both Crown Royal (luxury) and Crown Athlete (sporting) sedans, the latter returning for the first time since the seventh-generation Crowns, while Crown Majesta ran as a larger and separate line. No hardtop this time: the four-door shape was “pillared”. Monocoque again, though the weight saving of the previous generation had been lost as S170 piled on an extra 110 kg, using the Royal Saloon G as a yardstick. Similar dimensions, including the wheelbase, but more prominent grille and a higher body overall (30 mm). Athlete V featured 2·5-litre turbo with 280 hp. Wagon had double-wishbone suspension at rear, and was no longer a utilitarian van, and could be had as an Athlete model. Sedan to 2003, wagon to 2007.
