Toyota Avensis (T220). 1997–2003 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door saloon, 5-door estate. F/F, 1587, 1762, 1998 cm³ (I4 DOHC), 1975 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). Heavily revised Toyota Corona (T190) made at Burnaston, Derbyshire. Renamed Avensis, contraction of adventures and sisterhood (in Europe). Conventionally styled, slow and dull, though reliable. Mid-term changes in 2000 with variable valve timing added to engines. T codes from Corona retained, suggesting a continuation of the Corona lineage, with Avensis running parallel to Japanese production of Toyota Corona (T210). Wider than 1,700 mm limit in Japan—first-generation Avensis came in at 1,710 mm.
