Avalon gets fastback, six-light body for US 2019 model year. Plush ride, especially with adaptive dampers, and more agile than predecessor—even bordering on fun to drive. Four-cylinder hybrid coarse when petrol engine is worked more. Smooth V6, mated to eight-speed automatic. Smallest 2·0 for China. Fastback body limited rear headroom. Excellent quality inside and out, rivalling Toyota’s Lexus brand. Plenty of active safety equipment; no Android Auto integration at launch.
