Toyopet Corona (T40)

Toyopet Corona (T40/T50). 1964–70 (prod. 1,788,000 approx. incl. T80 and Mark II of this period). 4- and 5-door sedan, 2-door coupé, 3- and 5-door wagon, 2-door pick-up. F/R, 1198, 1350, 1490, 1587 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1591 cm³ (I4 OHC). Razor-style grille characterized third-generation Corona, which finally overtook Nissan Bluebird in domestic sales. Lighter than predecessor, with livelier performance. Twin-carburettor 1·6 OHV model designed to compete with Bluebird SSS, from 1965; hardtop added the same year. Fastback (RT56) from 1965 to 1968—possibly Japan’s first—with 1·5; Toyopet touted aerodynamic gains, even then, in contemporary marketing. Mid-term changes in 1966, raised bumpers for US legislation 1967. OHC from 1968. Plush Corona Mark II (T60) from 1968, starting a new model line, with the regular Corona Coupé deleted as a more upscale one emerged there. Exported as Toyota Corona.
