Tata Nano. 2009 to date (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door sedan. F/R, 623 cm³ (I2 OHC). Tata’s much-vaunted Rs. 1 lakh car (eventually selling at Rs. 1·15 lakh) announced in January 2008, but vehicles did not hit the roads till 2009 due to factory problems. The idea: bridge the gap between motorcycles and cars and provide Indian families with a safer mode of transport. R&D was kept to a low price thanks to Tata’s use of local knowledge, while the manufacturer claimed the car met safety legislation. Reality was that it skimped on airbags and even a passenger-side mirror. Never met its ambitious sales’ targets. Two specs at launch: basic and deluxe, with sales split evenly. Handling acceptable though small engine takes a while to get to 100 km/h, reasonably spacious. No fifth door initially, with luggage being loaded from the cabin. Gen X upgrades in 2015, with fifth door added, along with equipment upgrades and a light facelift.

Manufacturing location: Pantnagar, Uttarakhand, India

Marque: Tata
