Tata Indica. 1998–2018 (prod. n/a). 5-door sedan. F/F, 1193, 1396, 1405 cm³ petrol, 1193 cm³ petrol–LPG, 1405 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1396 cm³ diesel (I4 DOHC). Touted as first all-Indian car (if one acknowledges Hindustan Ambassador’s Morris Oxford III roots), though styling mostly by IDEA of Italy. Original 1·4-litre engine derived from Peugeot design. Smart hatchback styling, noted for being particularly roomy. Originally hampered by quality niggles, leading Tata to rush revised V2 into production (from 2001). Tata brand formerly appeared on trucks and SUVs, with Indica not regarded as well built as comparable Hyundais and Marutis. Generally good handling, road noise its main issue. Remained in production despite launch of Indica Vista, second-generation model, from 2008. Booted model and wagon called Tata Indigo (q.v.). Badge-engineered as CityRover from 2003 to 2005.

Manufacturing location: Pune, Maharashtra, India

Marque: Tata | Model: Tata Indica | Successors: Tata Indica Vista, Tata Bolt

q.v. Tata Indigo (2002–10), Tata Indigo CS
