Second-generation Jimny had an even longer life than its predecessor, thanks largely to production in India at Maruti. Softened leaf springs, improved handling, though it remained noisy and slow. Launched in Japan with carry-over two-stroke (SJ30) developing 28 PS, the last production vehicle there to have this type of engine; this early Jimny was produced till 1987. Larger-engined SJ40 (one-litre PHC) went to export markets in 1981, launched domestically in 1982; largest engine Suzuki produced at the time. LWB version of this spawned the Maruti Gypsy. JA71 took over from SJ30, with four-stroke engine, in 1986. Even larger engine appeared in JA51 of 1984, created by adding a cylinder to the 1·0 triple used in the [[Suzuki Cultus (AA41S)]]. US sales from 1986 model year, but a warning by ''Consumer Reports'' in 1988, about the Samurai’s (as it was known there) propensity to roll over irreparably damaged sales; it was deleted in the US after the 1995 model year. JA11 kicked off the 1990s with larger engine (657 cm³), further changes in 1992, 1993 and 1995. Late changes in 1995 for Japanese production to coil springs, aiding comfort; not adopted by Maruti or Santana of Spain, which licensed the Jimny for European manufacture. Japanese production ended 1998. Planned deletion in March 2019 at Maruti as the Gypsy could not meet new safety regulations, though a late order from the Indian Army proved to be a temporary stay of execution.
