Fronte returns to front-engined, front-wheel-drive. Suzuki spun off the Fronte into a three-door commercial model, the Alto, with the five-door targeting buyers wanting a better appointed specification. Same engines: 0·5 two-stroke and OHC units for Japan, 0·8 for export. Two-stroke deleted in 1981. Mid-term changes 1982, with rectangular headlamps introduced. The 0·8-litre model formed the basis of the original Maruti 800 in India in 1983, shipped there in CKD form.
