F/F, F/A, 657 cm³ (I3 OHC), 657 cm³ (I3 DOHC). Better space efficiency despite the same wheelbase, and low base price (¥470,000). No more Slide Slim: Alto went conventional, especially with a recession—there were cost reductions all round. Sport model dubbed Works, but wider, taking these variants of the Alto into the higher 5 segment for taxation. Facelift in 1997 with larger grille and tailgate shape changed, and grip handle added to rear hatch. Plenty of special editions throughout the run.
