1975 Subaru Leone 4WD.jpg

Subaru Leone. 1971–9 (prod. n/a). 2- and 4-door sedan, 2-door coupé, 2-door hardtop coupé, 5-door wagon. F/F, F/A, 1088, 1176, 1268, 1361, 1595 cm³ (F4 OHV). Subaru’s largest car at the time, launched initially as a coupé flagship complementing FF-1 models, before sedans and wagons appeared in 1972. Influenced by Nissan designs, thanks to tie-up with the firm. Considered more European oriented. Four-wheel-drive van from 1972, Subaru pioneering cheap four-wheel-drive for the masses. RX coupé that year, with four-wheel disc brakes, another mass-production first in Japan. Hardtop from 1973, with slightly more upright rear window compared with coupé. Minor grille changes 1973. Four-wheel-drive sedan from 1975. More substantial facelift for 1977, tidying up styling. Grand Am coupé in 1978, with US-spec bumpers. Also spawned Subaru BRAT (1977–81) pick-up.

Manufacturing location: Ōta, Gunma, Japan
