2002 Subaru Legacy B4 RSK.jpg

Subaru Legacy/Subaru Outback (BE/BH/BE5/BE9/BEE/BH5/BH9/BHC/BHE). 1998–2004 (prod. 434,624 Japan only). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/A, 1994, 2457 cm³ (F4 DOHC), 2457 cm³ (F4 OHC), 2999 cm³ (F6 DOHC). Evolutionary approach again for Legacy, although there were no more front-drive models for this series, and all wagons had the taller roof. Smallest 1·8 from previous Legacy now gone, with the EJ20 as the base unit. Capable and reliable, though interiors tended to be on the basic side. Still in the class 5 segment for Japanese taxation purposes, at 1,695 mm width. Lancaster wagon sold as Outback, now a separate model, outside Japan. Much safer than predecessor. Multi-link suspension at rear, helping to increase boot space. Wagon launched first, with B4 sedan at the end of 1998. Blitzen limited-edition model from 2000 (though shown at Tokyo in 1999), and 286 S401 STI limited editions. Large array of high-performance models. Mid-term changes 2001. Japanese production ceased in 2003, while US production continued to summer 2004.
