Largest Subaru when launched, going for a more upscale buyer than Leone did, with the wagon gaining a good reputation for solidity, especially in Outback guise, while the sedan became an alternative to European sporting saloons as well as the usual suspects from Toyota and Nissan. Outback spun off into its own line in 2003.
