Shanghai SH760.jpg

Shanghai SH760/Shanghai SH760A/Shanghai SH760B/Shanghai SH7221. 1963–91 (prod. 77,054). 4-door sedan. F/R, 2232, 2345 cm³ (I6 OHV). Copy of the Mercedes-Benz 220S, with lengthened and simpler front and rear ends, the SH760 was the mainstay of mainland Chinese production for decades and considered the People’s Republic’s official car by 1965. Origins were in prototypes developed in 1958–60, dubbed Phoenix, with the Chinese state taking apart a Mercedes-Benz. Engine of Shanghai workers’ own design. Laboriously produced by hand, and usually winding up in the hands of “grass roots” Communist Party officials who didn’t qualify for a Hongqi. Facelift in 1975. Spawned SH761 convertible.

Manufacturing location: Shanghai, China

Marque: Shanghai
