Saturn SL/Saturn SW/Saturn SC. 1991–6 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, 2-door coupé. F/F, 1901 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1901 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Saturn finally makes it to production at a greenfield plant in Tennessee, promising better customer service (which it delivered on, with fair, no-haggle pricing) and a range of modern cars to combat the imports (the Honda Accord was originally the target when the project was announced in the mid-1980s). SL, SL1, SL2 sedans at launch, and a single SC coupé; OHC engine was weak with 85 hp at launch (geared to economy), while DOHC delivered 124 hp, a brisk accelerator. Polymer door and quarter panels were revolutionary, and helped with Saturn’s high-tech image. SW1 and SW2 wagons from 1993. Base engine eventually uprated to 100 hp by 1995, the year a passenger airbag was added. SL and SWs were made to 1995, while SC carried on one more year.
