1987 Saab 9000.jpg

Saab 9000 (Tipo 4). 1984–92 (prod. 503,087 incl. Mk II). 4- and 5-door saloon. F/F, 1985, 2290 cm³ (I4 DOHC) Trollhättan’s version of the Tipo Quattro executive saloons, developed with Fiat. Well appointed, well built hatchback, first all-new Saab since the 99 débuted (if one does not count the Saab 600). Roomy, with good handling. Available exclusively with turbo power until 1986; some criticisms over transmission. Booted saloon, CD, launched 1988, with more sloped grille; Talladega special edition the same year (called Carlsson in UK) with higher boost. Larger 2·3 from 1990. Hatchbacks adopted CD grille in 1991.

Manufacturing location: Trollhättan, Sweden

Marque: Saab | Model: Saab 9000 | Successor: Saab 9000 Mk II

q.v. Fiat Croma (1985–96), Lancia Thema (1984–94), Alfa Romeo 164
