Rover Metro GTI.jpg

Rover Metro. 1990–4 (prod. 314,071 sold in UK, incl. some LC8 Metro in 1990 total). 3- and 5-door saloon, 2-door convertible. F/F, 1120, 1396 cm³ petrol, 1360 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1396 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Metro revitalized for the 1990s, with Alex Moulton’s front–rear interconnected Hydragas suspension system transforming handling, decades after the engineer envisioned it. Now officially a Rover. K-series engines and Peugeot gearbox helped modernize the Metro on a small budget. Not an all-new car by any means, but an extensive revamp of the former Austin Metro, and packaging that seemed revolutionary in 1980 was old-hat in 1990. Sales began falling soon after launch, with Ford Fiesta Mk III becoming the benchmark in the B-segment in the UK. Exported usually as Rover 100.

Manufacturing location: Longbridge, Birmingham, England

Marque: Rover | Predecessors: Austin Metro Mk II, MG Metro | Successor: Rover 100 (1994–7)
