Renault Espace 2000 GTS.jpg

Renault Espace (P23/J11/S11). 1984–90 (prod. 191,674). 5-door MPV. F/F, F/A, 1995, 2165 cm³ petrol, 2068 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC). In Europe, the pioneering MPV, although reaching production after the smaller Nissan Prairie (M10) and Plymouth Voyager (1984–95) in Asia and the Americas. Created and made by Matra as a potential successor to the Talbot–Matra Rancho on its production lines. Originally a design for Simca, but with the fate of successor brand Talbot uncertain under PSA, Matra approached Renault, who picked up the project, leaving the concept largely unchanged, though Renault engines had to be adapted to it. Fibreglass body on galvanized steel monocoque spaceframe. Seven seats, five of which were removable. Relatively light, allowing the engines to give the Espace decent performance. Facelift in 1988, and Quadra all-wheel-drive added. Interior then revised, with greater legroom and the second row could be folded into a flat table. Easy to drive and manœuvre, but poor driving position and with its share of mechanical and electrical gremlins.

Manufacturing location: Romorantin, Loir-et-Cher, France

Marque: Renault | Model: Renault Espace | Successor: Renault Espace II
