Renault Clio (X57). 1990–8 (prod. n/a). 3- and 5-door saloon. F/F, 1149, 1171, 1390, 1721, 1783, 1794 cm³ petrol, 1870 cm³ diesel (I4 OHC), 1764, 1998 cm³ (4 cyl. DOHC). Replacement for pioneering 5. Despite bland styling, sold very well, especially in UK, where Clio was buoyed by a series of ‘Nicole and Papa’ commercials. European Car of the Year 1991. Roomy, comfortable car, though lifeless steering on non-performance models. Phase 2 from 1993, more substantial revisions 1996. Performance model, 16S (for soupapes) from 1991; Clio Williams, a 500-run homologation special, by Renault Sport from 1992 (with Williams 2 and 3 following).

Manufacturing locations: Strasbourg, Alsace, France; Córdoba, Argentina

Marque: Renault | Model: Renault Clio | Predecessor: Renault 5 (140) | Successor: Renault Clio II
