Renault 5 (Projet 140). 1984–96 (prod. unknown). 3- and 5-door saloon. F/F, 956, 1108, 1390 cm³ (4 cyl. OHV), 1595 cm³ diesel, 1721 cm³ petrol (4 cyl. OHC). Marcello Gandini-styled update of Michel Boue’s classic 5 design. Marketed as the Supercinq in France, although the badging never reflected this. Larger and more aerodynamic. Transverse powertrain; simpler suspension with MacPherson struts. September 1984 launch; five-door from May 1985, with extra 6 cm in length. Diesel from November 1985. Revisions in 1988. New trim levels in 1990, with range rationalized after introduction of Clio in 1991.
