Porsche 911 (Typ 997). 2004–12 (prod. 100,000 as of July 2007). 2-door coupé, 2-door convertible, 2-door Targa. R/R, R/A, 3596, 3600, 3614, 3797, 3800, 3824, 3996 cm³ (F6 DOHC). Improved version of 996, and thanks to traction control and engineering, most idiosyncracies have been ironed out. Arguably the finest sports car in the world, even if more a grand tourer than the original 911. None carry 911 badge; base model called Carrera. Targa has glass roof that slides down; GT3 homologation special from March 2006; Turbo (480 PS) released June 2006; twin-turbo GT2 (520 PS) from mid-2007. Facelift in 2008 (GT3 in 2009), with direct fuel injection and revised Porsche Communication Management console. Various limited editions, including Sport Classic, recalling 2·7 Carrera RS, and Speedster, both with deliveries commencing 2010; GT2 RS shown May 2010, limited to 500 examples.
