Pontiac T1000 (T-car). 1981–3 (prod. n/a). 3- and 5-door sedan. F/R, 1398, 1599 cm³ (I4 OHC). Rebadged Chevrolet Chevette, following the formula of the Canadian-market Pontiac Acadian, which had been sold since the 1970s. Made some sense: people were flocking to small cars and Pontiac wanted a slice of the action. The problem was that the Chevette was long past its sell-by date, and buyers were not convinced at the lightly changed T1000 (grille and taillights were the main identifiers; body pressings were identical). Sixty thousand were sold in the first year, but that had dwindled to a tenth by 1987, when the car was called the 1000 (q.v.).
