Pontiac Firebird (F-body). 1982–92 (prod. n/a). 3-door coupé, 2-door convertible. F/R, 2474 cm³ (I4 OHV), 2835, 3097, 3791 cm³ (V6 OHV), 4998, 5735 cm³ (V8 OHV). Far more modern Firebird for the 1980s, with smooth, aerodynamic body. Major departure from previous model. Lighter than predecessor, with fuel economy a concern during development. Not the best performer with the smaller engines, but very good handling. Poor ride. Fours to 1985 inclusive, with 2·8 taking over as base engine; larger V8 from 1987, and 3·1 as base unit from 1990. Turbo 3·8 V6 from Buick Grand National offered in TTA for one year, 1989. Refreshes in 1985 and 1991; notchback from 1988. Popularized on TV with Knight Rider.
