More swoopy styling for the 1970s, the Firebird came to represent the decade in US culture—TV’s The Rockford Files and CHiPs and the cinema’s Smokey and the Bandit featured various models—but marketing aside, it was unreliable and impractical. Slight “fuselage” shape of cabin let moisture in, the two rear seats were not that useful, and gas mileage was poor. Ride was not up to scratch, but handling was above-average. Shovel nose from 1974; larger rear window from 1975, aiding the poor rear visibility; more substantial facelifts for 1977 and 1979. Twinned with Chevrolet Camaro (1970–81).
