Opel Ascona. 1975–81 (prod. over 1,200,000). 2- and 4-door saloon. F/R, 1196 cm³ (I4 OHV), 1297 cm³ (I4 OHC), 1584, 1897, 1979 cm³ petrol, 1998 cm³ diesel (I4 CIH), 2410 cm³ (I4 DOHC). Modernized Ascona with larger glass area, but with the estate version dropped. Débuted at IAA in 1975. Longer wheelbase, with an extra 88 mm; body longer and wider. The smallest 1·2 now ridiculously underpowered with the larger car, and was eventually deleted. Two-litre from 1977, diesel (with hump in bonnet to accommodate the taller engine) from 1978, aimed at the taxi market. Mid-term changes in 1979, modernizing the look slightly. Homologation special, the 400, in 1979, featuring a 144 PS 2·4-litre DOHC engine and a Getrag five-speed gearbox. Related to Vauxhall Cavalier Mk I, Chevrolet Ascona and Chevrolet Chevair as well as Opel Manta B.
