Personal-luxury car for Oldsmobile, with a startling design that made it a memorable hit in US motoring at launch, and front-wheel-drive transmission—something that had not been on a car there since the Cord 810 and 812 30 years before. Toronado—a coined name, originally used on a Chevrolet show car—demonstrated that Oldsmobile was the innovator among the US GM marques. Fairly balanced weight distribution, 54–46 front–rear, contributing to Toronado’s reputation as a driver’s car. Longitudinal torsion bars at front with anti-roll bar, beam axle on leaf springs at rear, with quad shock absorbers. Excellent roadholding for the era, particularly on such a large car, though Oldsmobile softened the suspension during the run. Engine developed 385 hp. Motor Trend Car of the Year at launch. Front disc brakes and radial tyres as options for 1967, though sales halved in the second year, and only rose slightly in subsequent years. Facelift in 1968, rear end altered in 1969 resulting in extra trunk space, exposed headlamps for 1970.
Marque: Oldsmobile | Model: Oldsmobile Toronado | Successor: Oldsmobile Toronado (1971–8)
