Sentra seems to be a name adopted by Nissan and Datsun when no other name will do for a compact car. It first appeared (as Datsun Sentra) as the Mexican name for the Nissan Sunny in the 1970s, but most famously, it is synonymous with front-wheel-drive Sunnys in the US. In the mid-1980s, Sentra was used for a range combining both Pulsar and Sunny variants in New Zealand, and this situation remained till the end of the 1990s when local assembly stopped. In South Africa, Sentra adorned some Pulsar models. By 2000, however, Sentra was its own line with its own bodyshell, built in Mexico for the North American market, owing only its platform to the Sunny. In 2006, a new Sentra appeared on the Renault Mégane platform, bearing no similarity to the Sunny-replacing Tiida in Japan, which rested on a stretched Renault Clio one. The name adorned various interpretations of the Pulsar and the related Bluebird Sylphy in the Netherlands Antilles, Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. In some markets, it is used in place of Sylphy.
