Nissan Laurel (C35). 1997–2002 (prod. n/a). 4-door hardtop sedan. F/R, F/A, 1998, 2498 cm³ (I6 DOHC), 2826 cm³ diesel (I6 OHC). Laurel rediscovers sportiness, and loses the formal looks of the last two generations. Reduced engine range, though diesel gained electronic injection in 1999. Again a “pillared hardtop” style, with the B-pillars hidden behind glass. MacPherson struts up front (multilink on all-wheel-drive models) and multi-link at rear. Thirtieth anniversary of nameplate in October 1997, commemorated with special luxury model. Turbo gained variable-valve timing in 1998, while two-litre engine became a lean-burn unit. Mid-term changes in 1999. TV navigation system for Navi Edition in 2000. New emission regulations saw to an end of this generation and, with it, the Laurel was consigned to history as the company sought to cut costs.
