Morris Major Élite (YDO1). 1962–4 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan. F/R, 1622 cm³ (I4 OHV). BMC Australia further develops the Major—no Austin equivalent as that became the brand for larger family cars, while Morris was reserved for smaller models. B-series engine bored out to 1622 cm³, giving it plenty of power, including in top gear, almost as effortless as a six. Well equipped with full instrumentation, dished steering wheel and column, padded dashboard, seat belt mounting points, heater, windscreen washers, and padded sun visors. Optimistically marketed as a six-seater. More suited to Australian conditions than the original, with greater ground clearance, toughened suspension, telescopic rear dampers and stronger axles. With the local work, Élite was 96 per cent Australian. Price actually dropped compared with Series II, making it especially competitive.
Marque: Morris | Model: Morris Major | Predecessors: Morris Major Series II, Austin Lancer Series II | Successor: Morris 1100 Mk I
