Mitsubishi i. 2005–20 (prod. 89,084 to end of 2012, plus 17,517 electric to end of 2011). 5-door sedan. M/R, M/A, 658 cm³ (I3 DOHC); 16 kWh electric. In all the literature as Mitsubishi i, spelt with lowercase, in the age of the Apple iPod. Overpriced, narrow car, but practically designed in that most of the length is occupied by its cabin, but overpriced in most markets for a 660 cm³ keijidōsha car. Takes concept of Mini Spiritual concept car and original Smart: mid-engined, rear-wheel drive. However, far better than Smart with four doors, four seats; fulfils city-car purpose admirably. Styling by Frenchman Olivier Boulay. Production commenced December 2005 for January 2006 deliveries. Electric i-MiEV model from 2009, badge-engineered as Citroën C-Zero and Peugeot Ion, with longer front bumper. Petrol model made till 2013. Improvements in 2018 resulted in the i-MiEV’s length increasing 85 mm, changing its classification from a light car to a compact car. Scarcely updated in any meaningful way during its run.
