First-generation Galant, bearing the Colt tag in some markets including Japan, helped Mitsubishi find export markets, especially the US where it was the first Dodge Colt. GTO from 1970; FTO from 1971—both considered legendary, high-performance models. Established Mitsubishi as a performance marque in Japan, and Galant had competition history, including Southern Cross Rally in Australia in 1972.
