Mitsubishi Colt (RB/RC/RD/RE). 1982–90 (prod. n/a). 4- and 5-door sedan. F/F, 1410, 1597 cm³ (I4 OHC). Although Mitsubishi Australia began selling the Colt III—a rebadged Mirage—in 1981, it was not until 1982 that the model entered local production in South Australia. Larger engine introduced with local production. Although nearing the end of its run in Japan, Australia soldiered on with the Colt till the end of the decade, where it was Mitsubishi’s main weapon against newer small cars such as the Ford Laser. Refined and quite well regarded, but not as well built as Japanese models. Eventually exported to New Zealand toward the end of its run to complement newer Mirages, as an entry-level model. Replaced by imported third-generation Mirage and fourth-generation Lancer, both badged Lancer in Australian market and dubbed the CA series.
