Ford had two approaches to the minivan market: the first was its Aerostar, the second was to enter into an agreement with Nissan (after failing to come to one with Mazda, who favoured rear-wheel drive) to create a front-wheel-drive model for North America. The latter became the Villager, taking a name first used at Edsel, then as a model variant describing various Mercury station wagons. All were on the same platform, though those made from the 1999 model year on had revised sheetmetal and a driver’s side rear door. Nissan sold its version as the Quest.
