Mercury Montego. 1972–6 (prod. n/a). 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon, 2-door hardtop coupé, 2-door fastback coupé. F/R, 250 in³ (I6 OHV), 302, 351, 400, 429, 460 in³ (V8 OHV). Overweight and overstyled intermediate range, a twin of the Ford Torino (1972–6). GT fastback coupé replaced Cyclone for 1972–3. Shorter wheelbase for coupés. Old-school body-on-frame construction. Indifferent workmanship, poor fuel economy, handling and rear visibility. Cougar spun off from Montego underpinnings in 1974, adopting the fastback shape; the range expanded in 1977 to take over from all Montegos. The last Montego till the nameplate was revived briefly in the 2000s.
