1981 Mercury Cougar Sedan.jpg

Mercury Cougar (Fox). 1980–2 (prod. 222,773). 2-door coupé, 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, 2301 cm³ (I4 OHC), 3273 cm³ (I6 OHV), 3798 cm³ (V6 OHV), 4186, 4942 cm³ (V8 OHV). Cougar downsized on to Fox platform, replacing the intermediates of 1977–9. Squared-off styling seemed fashionable in the early 1980s, but this line of Cougar did not sell well, people perceiving them to be upscale Ford Fairmonts. XR-7 coupé initially for 1980. Base coupé and sedan added for 1981 to replace Mercury Monarch, wagon for 1982. Four-cylinder added in 1981, the first time a four had been part of the Cougar range.
