1977 Mercury Cougar.jpg

Mercury Cougar. 1977–9 (prod. 580,245). 2-door coupé, 4-door sedan, 5-door wagon. F/R, 302, 351, 400 in³ (V8 OHV). Redesigned Montego with a new name. Sedans and a Villager wagon (the latter for 1977 only) complemented the line-up, though XR-7 name was applied only to the two-door. Twinned with Ford LTD II of these years, which meant it was a Thunderbird platform-mate for the first time. Good ride, but terrible handling; above-average reliability among US intermediates, but dated by the late 1970s.

Manufacturing location: Lorain, Ohio, USA

Marque: Mercury | Model: Mercury Cougar | Predecessors: Mercury Cougar (1974–6), Mercury Montego (1972–6) | Successor: Mercury Cougar (1980–2)
