1969 Mercury Cougar Convertible.jpg

Mercury Cougar. 1969–70 (prod. 172,412). 2-door coupé, 2-door convertible. F/R, 302, 351, 390, 428 in³ (V8 OHV). Added bulk for 1969 (same wheelbase, but 3·5 in increase in length and 2·9 in in width), and the addition of a handsome convertible, for Mercury’s Ford Mustang (1969–70) twin. Dropping character line on the sides, while horizontal ribs characterized front grille; hidden headlights continued. Addition of 351 Windsor V8. Boss 302 from April 1, 1969, coupled with the Eliminator appearance package. Eliminator available on all but convertibles and 351 two-barrel V8 models. Vertical grille returned for 1970, but centre divider had a prominent bulge that added to the car’s length. Suspension improvements for 1970 models, aiding handling. Sales slid compared with 1967–8.
