Mercedes-Benz tapped in to the growing SUV market in the US, and even built a factory there to feed the thirst, but the first ML had quality issues that began letting the marque down. Mercedes had to make the adjustment from ‘Made in Germany’ to ‘Made by Mercedes’, but the damage would be done by this model and others around this era. Things improved as the years wore on—the second-generation ML was far better, but it had moved to a unibody structure. The third-generation ML added plushness, but also weight, although it could be said that Mercedes-Benz was simply following consumer preferences.
